"There has never been a teacher that believed in me as much as Dr. Brandon Szuminsky. Most teachers take a passing interest in their student, knowing them only by their first name, or the work they turn in. Dr. Szuminsky fostered relationships with his pupils, ensuring that whatever concern, idea or question you had was addressed. He asked us about our dreams, and worked with us to make them happen. After years of being told ‘no’ and hearing that I couldn’t become a journalist, Dr. Szuminsky told me that yes, I could. He believed in me more than I believed in myself and refused to allow me to give up, even when I faltered. From my first job interview to my first byline, Dr. Szuminsky provided guidance, belief, knowledge and aid to me. He encouraged me every time I felt unsure about my dreams of writing and taught me not only about journalism, but about the importance of believing in yourself."
